According to researchers, loneliness is a killer and can have worse effects than smoking, and overeating. Isolation and loneliness can cause greater hazard than you may know.
According to the American Psychological Association, more than 42.6 million adults who belong to the age group of 45 and above are suffering from chronic loneliness.
Another study conducted by the Brigham Young University states that being lonely is worse than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The researchers analyzed data from various health studies which included data from loneliness and isolation.
Julianne Holt-Lunstad, the lead author of the study conducted by the Brigham Young University explained that “the result of this study is comparable to obesity; something that public health takes very seriously.” According to her, people should start giving more importance to social relationships.
The researches stated that increased social connection reduced the risk of premature death by 50%.
Hold- Lunstad said that since loneliness and isolation are indistinct words, so they were not paid much attention.
According to CBC News, Dr. Nasreen Khatri who is a clinical psychologist and gerontologist at the Rotman Institute at Baycrest Health Science, Toronto, the best way to deal with loneliness and isolation is to be around people. She says that the presence of other people can improve person’s stress hormone levels and cortisol levels.
Social relationships enable people to maintain a healthy routine. The government should take steps to deal with the widespread isolation and loneliness.
Dipika Damerla, Ontario Minister of Seniors Affairs explained that the Liberal Party has made funds available to deal with the social isolation amongst the elder people. She said,“I can tell you with confidence that the entire $155-million plan marries these two ideas which are that people want to live on their own as long as they can, but not at the cost of getting socially isolated.”
According to Dr. Oren Amitay who is a Toronto psychologist, people can deal with chronic loneliness by keeping themselves busy with any hobby or some work and owning a pet can definitely help for people who are lonely because of lack of an activity.
